Cathryn Thomas
My Story

I have spent my life either playing music or making things.
I spent the first half of my career as an orchestral musician, with my bachelor's degree from Indiana University. I played the flute in Tulsa orchestras, and in the pit for the Tulsa Ballet and for Light Opera Oklahoma. I played noontime recitals and faculty recitals, and I taught music at ORU and Tulsa Community College. I taught private flute lessons for years and years, and I taught choral music at private schools. I had my three children during those years.
I went back to school, and in 2001 I got my Master of Music in music performance at The University of Tulsa. I love going to school and love my music. I loved it so much I developed overuse injuries and had to cut way back on the piano. It was a pretty depressing time.
I went back to making things. I started working in clay, using different muscles, which was good therapy for my hands and arms... and was so much fun! I started taking art classes at Tulsa Community College and loved them so much I went back to The University of Tulsa for three years and got my Master of Fine Arts degree in studio art. Since graduating in 2012, I have taught elementary art and music for Tulsa Public Schools and studio art classes for TCC. I retired from TPS, and am currently teaching art appreciation classes online for TCC and am teaching handbuilding and wheel classes at Red Heat Ceramics Studio in Tulsa.
Now I work in a studio in my home. I watch the birds and walk and garden. I travel to see my children and grandchildren. I take time for my friends and family. I travel to take art workshops, and I teach art locally. I play the piano and am a piano accompanist for choirs.
I'm very lucky to be able to say that I love everything I do.
